First the you have the nitrous that sits in a bottle, often a 10 lbs bottle. At the push of a button the nitrous is then released into a nitrous fuel line, and sent to the front engine bay. On wet kits, the nitrous is combined with fuel and sprayed into the intake. On dry kits, there is no fuel mixed with the nitrous, and nitrous is sprayed directly into the intake.
Wet kits are safer to use than dry kits, because of the fact that wet kits mix with fuel to help cool the manifold, keeping engine temps to a minimal. Nitrous is an oxidizing agent. It carries a much higher concentration of oxygen into the combustion chamber, letting the fuel to burn hotter, stronger, and faster. This is okay to use, but you do need a few safety precautions to run nitrous kits. 1 precaution is upgraded spark plugs. Stock plugs can become faulty under use of nitrous, melting in the most extreme conditions. After market plugs can absorb the higher temperatures in the engine, and still function the way it should. Another issue when running nitrous kits, is that you want to be at WOT when you shoot your nitrous. This is because of the oxidizing part of nitrous. It will burn up your fuel to fast in the combustion chamber if you are not getting enough fuel, cause pre-detonation, running rich, or running lean. To fix this issue, a few companies came up with some award winning hardware. They are little computers that you connect to your ECU, that will only allow nitrous to be shot when you are at wide open throttle. Another part of this technology is that the new computer can see if your engine is running to lean, or to rich and shutt the nitrous off. This is also very important.
